How federal privacy rules change
How often are the federal privacy regulations actually amended, and when did each last change?
Method
The eCFR keeps a dated version of every section of the Code of Federal Regulations since January 2017. For each part tracked here, an amendment is a date on which at least one section changed in substance; the eCFR marks editorial corrections as not substantive, and those are left out. The versions dated at the start of the history are the text already in force in 2017, not amendments, and are left out too. The date is the date the change took effect in the Code, which can be later than the Federal Register publication.
Statutes change these rules only through the agencies; a law that is amended without a rule change (or a rule that is stayed by a court) does not show up here. See the privacy law library for the statutes.
